It’s a 5w solid state modeler that wants you to think it’s a tube amp, even down to the orange light behind the grille that gradually gets brighter after you turn it on, replicating the soft glow of saturated tubes. The lead setting was a little bland for our tastes. It landed somewhere between clean and crunch, so it didn’t give us any real clarity, nor did it give us enough break up to make it tonally interesting. Brit Hi was a fun setting to play with, especially as you don’t typically expect that much growl to come from such a small amp! We also enjoyed experimenting with the modern voicing, which when paired with the phaser effect and hall reverb gave us some ethereal “Bill and Ted” style tones.

What’s important, this is a battery-powered amp. Of course, you can also use it with the supplied AC adapter, but if you decide to use the batteries, you can be sure that it will last up to six hours of playing. This is a big advantage, especially for those who like to perform! It’s a really good combo for busking. Most of THR's effects feature VCM effects processors. If you don’t like the sound of Yamaha THR5 or you simply can’t afford it right now, that’s totally fine! There’s quite a few other really good cheap amps that also deserve a lot of attention. Sound quality is subjective, but it’s hard not to be impressed with the sounds Yamaha manages to produce through the tiny built-in speakers. We would like to have seen at least bass and treble dials to shape the sound a bit more.

I have no hesitation in recommending this model to all musicians who are searching for a compact and reliable combo for home practice. The THR5 won’t disappoint you! Don’t worry though – these things aren’t too serious. The output signal for DI is very low, and there's nothing you can do to control the gain for DI. All the settings for master, volume, and gain control affect only the processed sounds, not the DI. In my case, my guitar signal was peaking at -34db when recording, which is pretty low, creating a bad signal to noise ratio. When compared to Focusrite Scarlett Solo, for example, the difference in quality is gigantic, so I recommend you to use a proper audio interface for better sound recording instead of the THR5. Clean: Rich clean tones from a 6L6 power section with gentle breakup for incredible jazz, blues and country sounds.

I mean, it might be just me, but I don’t feel the firmness when I grab the thin metal rod they’ve provided. Yamaha THR5 is a small combo suitable for the most demanding guitarists out there. Thanks to the compact size and affordable price, it’s actually one of the most popular amps manufactured by Yamaha. Additionally, although this amp does a great job at creating various different tones, it will never sound like a true tube amp. Hence, if you’re searching for a vintage, touch-sensitive overdrive – this amp is not for you.
