About this deal

Manning brilliantly illuminates the insecurity of war, and the ways in which it liberates impulses in people which were better repressed.

Tension mounts as the fascists take over, and the Pringles, with the help of Clarence Lawson, try to smuggle Sasha out to safety. In Manning's The Doves of Venus (1960), based on Manning's friendship with Stevie Smith, female characters display "the 1950s anger more often associated. He considered the first three volumes to be "probably the most important long work of fiction written by a woman since the war" and the character of Guy Pringle to be "one of the most fully created male leads in contemporary fiction. She frequently sacked vets – telling one "I do not pay you to tell me that there is nothing wrong with my animal"– and trying animal faith healers at times. In subsequent reprintings, the name "Reggie Smith" was replaced by "Filmer Smith", veiling the allusion, but Manning found out and was furious. Manning also worked for the BBC; she wrote scripts for radio including adaptations of novels by George Eliot, Arnold Bennett and Ada Leverson. The School for Love (1951) is the tale of an orphaned boy's journey of disillusionment in a city that is home to Arabs, Jews and a repressive, colonial presence represented in the novel by the cold, self-righteous, and anti-Semitic character of Miss Bohun.

Her gallery of personages is huge, her scene painting superb, her pathos controlled, her humour quiet and civilized.Egypt remains a place of privilege and sexual exchange for the non-combatants and the Pringles' marriage slowly disintegrates. Her mother discouraged such pursuits, and confiscated material she thought unsuitable; when she found her daughter reading the Times Literary Supplement she scolded that "young men do not like women who read papers like that", and that Manning should focus on marketable job skills, such as typing. Harriet glimpses the unexplained through the window, bright eyes of beasts racing through the Romanian forest by the trackside.
