About this deal

News about our Dezeen Awards China programme, including entry deadlines and announcements. Plus occasional updates.

It turns out I’m not the only nerd obsessed with dated DIY furniture manuals. In compiling this list I came across a bibliography by designer Sam Winks that included many of the books I own or have digital copies of and many more that I’ve never seen before. You can read his post and bibliography here. In addition to furniture manuals, Winks has a bunch of DIY home building books that I haven’t included in this list. He refers to his collection of books as “The Self Determination Library.” Responding to society´s current and future needs born from modern culture, this project explores the potential of temporary furniture. The desk won't really work unless you have some legs or cables, so let's get to it. I used #4 braided picture wire because it was the strongest they had and is very bendy.

Drill a pilot hole in one of the outter studs. The height of this hole is determined by how high you want the desk. You may want some people to help you hold up the desk temporarily while you find a good height. Mine ended up being 25.5" from the ground, which is iffy given the carpet. We had Will Holman on episode 55 of our podcast. He collected his stylish and resourceful wisdom into a DIY manual called Guerilla furniture design : how to build lean, modern furniture with salvaged materials. Luxury is not anymore a matter of comfort. Nowadays, luxury is to be able to decide where you want to have a moment of peace, a chance to escape from hectic activity of contemporary lifestyles. The principle motifs of the current DIY movement are an intense preoccupation with historical models and prototypes as well as the search for furniture that is low-cost and formally pleasing, as numerous international examples in this exhibition serve to document. Berlin-based architect Van Bo Le-Mentzel, for example, orients his Hartz IV Furniture project (the title of which refers to the German government’s current [un]employment policy) on furniture classics, especially those by Gerrit Rietveld. And works like those of the Swiss duo Kueng Caputo or the London-based designer Martino Gamper bear witness to the continued currency of 1970s projects such as Mari’s Autoprogettazione.Completed frame construction. Sand all edges and faces to prep for finish work. I suggest being very methodical about where you sand to avoid repeating sections. was originally of my own design, but in the course of investigating various options for my design's specifics, I discovered this book: Nomadic Furniture. The book is not quite what I expected, nor exactly what the description would lead you to believe, but more about that in a moment. First let's talk about my bookshelves. urn:oclc:481219 Republisher_date 20120905155451 Republisher_operator [email protected] Scandate 20120901153107 Scanner scribe13.shenzhen.archive.org Scanningcenter shenzhen Worldcat (source edition) Peter Stamberg’s 1976 book Instant furniture : low-cost, well-designed, easy-to-assemble tables, chairs, couches, beds, desks, and storage systems, provides clear plans for some of Enzo Mari’s pieces as well as Stamberg’s own designs that show a heavy Mari influence. The 1x2s support the wings of the desktop while it is open. I used the "hhcs" for this as well, but would have preferred mitered ends...

Open Structures is a similar modular concept by Brussels designer Thomas Lommée done with metal tubes and connectors. I find it a bit more aesthetically pleasing than the drilled 2×2 lumber in the Grid Beam system, but you’ll need to be handy with metal if you want to try to homebrew this. Over the past decade, the new opportunities of communication and participation represented by the Internet and Web 2.0 have taken DIY-cultural hype to a renewed fever-pitch. DIY portals, communities, and blogs are booming, and designers, programmers, constructors of machines, and users are busy developing new Internet-capable modalities of designing and producing furniture and furnishing items. urn:lcp:nomadicfurniture00henn:epub:37ebe5bf-ecad-4033-b9e9-4ee1adef825f Extramarc University of Alberta Libraries Foldoutcount 0 Identifier nomadicfurniture00henn Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t2892fd3w Isbn 039470228XAlongside numerous designs that can be made from wood using simple tools—such as the MAK-Table by the Italian group Recession Design—a major share of this young and flexible mode of home décor consists of objects fashioned from mass-produced, semi-finished wooden elements that can be found in any hardware store. The spectrum ranges from emphatically functional furniture to intricate lighting objects like those produced by the New York-based designer Lindsey Adelman. Designers like Jerszy Seymour and Matali Crasset also deal frequently with the diverse ways of developing furniture that can be built by the end-user. For those adventurers out there who spend a lot of time conquering terrains and who want to reward themselves with a seat overlooking some breathtaking scenery, the Nomadic Furniture series from Jorge Penadés will be right up your street and we here at The Coolector are definitely impressed with the innovation on show from the Spanish designer. The plan is to keep adding to this post. If you know of books and resources for cheap, easy to make, well designed furniture leave a comment. For every resource that I’ve mentioned there’s probably a dozen more. When possible I’ve linked to free pdfs or books you can borrow at the Internet Archive. Daily updates on the latest design and architecture vacancies advertised on Dezeen Jobs. Plus occasional news. Dezeen Jobs Weekly The 1970s was a golden era for DIY furniture manuals. Two of my favorites are Nomadic Furniture, and Nomadic Furniture 2 by designers Victor Papanek and James Hennessy. Nomadic Furniture . The MAK Museum in Vienna did an exhibition of Papanek and Hennessy’s work and put out a catalog called Nomadic furniture 3.0. You can watch a 2013 lecture James Hennessy did about his work on the YouTubes.Originally conceived for a refugee aid project the design collective EOOS has a free Social Furniture Open Design Manual featuring some simple and handsome tables, shelves, kitchen cabinets and even a raised garden bed. The designs remind me of Joep van Lieshout’s work. I think this is a little ridiculous. I'm not sure I know anyone over the age of 10 who would actually want a room built up like this. (Perhaps these flights of fancy are just another way the book is dated and silly room themes were common in the 70s?). The 1x4s will be used to make the frame of the desk that mounts to the wall. I used the handheld circular saw for all of these cuts, but a miter saw would have helped immensely (which is why I asked for one for Christmas). To this day, the handbooks from which this exhibition takes its title—Nomadic Furniture 1 and 2, authored in 1973/1974 by Austro-American designer Victor Papanek (1923– 1998) together with James Hennessey (*1945)—offer a young and creative audience concrete instructions for building simple and inexpensive furniture; what’s more, they represent valuable points of reference for the contemporary DIY movement. Prototypical classics of DIY furniture culture that first arose in the interwar and postwar periods, such as the famous Crate Chair (1934) designed by Gerrit Rietveld, are still viewed as important sources of inspiration today. With its emphasis on the field of furniture design, the exhibition NOMADIC FURNITURE 3.0. New Liberated Living? examines this movement situated on the threshold between the subcultural and the mainstream including a look at its historical context: as early as the first half of the 20th century, home-built furniture came to be regarded as a suitable approach for socially conscious and (since the late 1960s) ecologically sustainable design.
