Taking a slightly darker tone than her previous books, the story centres around eighteen year old Nikki and the toxic relationship with her abusive mother. Over the course of that week SO much happens that I’m not going to explain here, so I’ll just recommend this book for anyone who enjoys the YA books that lean into the messy feelings of crushes, sibling back-and-forth, friendship drama, and parental healing. This took me on a rollercoaster of emotions; from squealing at the adorable-ness of the friends-to-lovers romance (Nikki + Mal forever), to the pain of reading about the family relationships, particularly Nikki's relationship with her mother. but when her best friend, malachai, begs her to spend just one week with him to see if he can convince her to stay, she gives in. But when Nikki’s little sister goes missing their plans are interrupted, and Nikki is forced to face her feelings about both her mum and Mal.That they would continue to learn together and hold onto their worth, and that they would have each other. Songs for the soundtrack: "The Worst" by Jhené Aiko, "Such A Thing" by Alex Isley and Jack Dine, "Promises" by Cleo Sol, "home with you" by FKA twigs, "Love. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review!

After a painful betrayal by her sister and a heated argument with their mother, Nikki is kicked out and finds herself homeless. But, it does add a layer of complexity that may be useful in starting further discussions with young readers surrounding such a sensitive topic.

But when Nikki's little sister goes missing their plans are interrupted, and Nikki is forced to face her feelings about both her mum and Mal. This was so beautiful - that she could acknowledge that her sister needs to un/learn the same things she does and that when she hurt her it was just an attempt to protect herself.

From Joya Goffney of Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry comes a stirring YA coming-of-age, best-friends-to-lovers romance about a girl named Nikki who plans to run away from small-town Texas but ultimately finds that her oldest friend, Mal, just might be the one who’s been there for her all along.Which is such a kudos to the author's skill - that she's able to let her characters make mistakes without making them horrible people- absolutely love to see it. It’s got all the drama and romance you’d want from a YA rom-com but it also brilliantly explores the impact complex and tumultuous family dynamics have on a person and the way they connect to the people and world around them.

In high school, she challenged herself with to-do lists full of risk-taking items like 'hug a random boy' and 'eat a cricket', which inspired her debut novel, Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry . Will Nikki find a reason to stay in Texas, or will this spring break be the last time she sees them?

One aspect of Goffney’s writing that I’ve always enjoyed and found to be her strength is the strength to make me feel. He believes that over the course of a week, he can convince her to stay in Texas, or to at least graduate high school.
