About this deal

There was something very heart-warming about an uncle and his nephew solving mysteries together too. I am so glad I picked up the first book on a whim early in 2020, because I have devoured every entry so far. This time, Hal and Uncle Nat find themselves investigating an ancient family curse, a missing will, and a witch who is said to prowl the railway line at Dead Man's Pass.

We enjoyed this book as much as we did the rest of the series but our 9-year old who isn’t easily scared (Harry Potters, Star Wars, Nevermore series etc) found this one a bit much and had some nightmares. com to record that I am either a Student, Parent, Nursery Teacher, Primary Teacher, Secondary Teacher, Literacy Coordinator, Librarian, Bookseller, Publisher or Other so that I can receive worldbookday. Legend has it the Kratzensteins, a family of rich and powerful railway tycoons, are cursed, but there is no such thing as a curse, is there . With danger and warring motives at every junction, will Hal and Uncle Nat be able to crack the case before their time in Germany is up?From the beginning I was hooked, wanting to solve the mystery and, as usual, I enjoyed the twists and turns along the way. It also feels different because Hal and Nat go in knowing there's a mystery to solve, rather than stumbling across it. There's a family curse, a spooky mountain, a healthy amount of Faust, and it's just thick, solid adventure from that point on. I think it's actually a children's book, and it was the sort of book that I'd have been very interested In between the ages of 10 and 12.

With a cast of delightfully dubious characters who are all potential suspects, Kidnap on the California Comet will keep readers guessing and reading on to enjoy the developing friendships and follow the red herrings across the USA, to a satisfying conclusion. Although I'm still interested in continuing this series, this story was probably the worst in the series.

There are still a lot of trains, but once Hal and Nat get to the castle, a lot of time is spent in it, moving around the old house and grounds.
