About this deal

Just beyond the pebble ridge is Northam Burrows Country Park, which lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has 253 hectares of grassy coastal plain with salt marsh, sand dunes and grasslands.

The length of time a person has been resident in the UK has been calculated from the time a resident most recently arrived in the UK (excluding holidays/short stays outside the UK). I found the pacing to be quite unbalanced, as the exposition seemed to drag on forever before the plot finally decided to go somewhere.Sounds lovely – and good point about some of these Persephones dealing with the war and its aftermath. Joan Wintour at RHUL tells us that William Edgell inherited Milton Place from a distant relative and passed it on to his son, also William.

Figures for economic activity do not include those aged under 16, or those family members aged 16-18 who are in full-time education.

Anita has had a difficult war and suffered heartbreak so Milton Place becomes the ideal place for her to recover. DeWaal's observations about 20th century English life, the class system, values and lifestyles is perceptive as an outsider view though she spent many years living there. The little ones will love a day at The BIG Sheep for family-friendly rides, activities and animal-themed amusements.Persephone Books discovered the manuscript a few years ago and decided it was about time this novel was published. In this area (Milton Place, Halifax), 61% of the residents were born in the United Kingdom, which is significantly below the UK average. Both the foreword and afterword explain some of the history of both author and book and that both of Elisabeth de Waal's work could have been lost which would have been such a shame as this is a gentle story of thwarted love and opportunity.

Edgell Wyatt Edgell was a noted local philanthropist, contributing large amounts to the rebuilding of St John’s Church in 1817 and founding the Wyatt Edgell Egham Coal Charity. The two central characters represent all that is best in Elisabeth’s world and her most lyrical writing is about the grounds and in particular the flowers that are found there, which mean so much to Mr Barlow and to his visitor Anita. The property welcomes a family of six to stay in a well-equipped, spacious cottage whilst exploring the stunning coast. The delightful quayside village of Appledore and the pretty beach at Instow are both just over three miles away, whilst the traditional market town of Barnstaple is just ten miles away, and the picturesque fishing village of Clovelly, with its quaint cobbled streets, is eleven miles away.

The author took the story to a place I wasn’t expecting but dealt with it in a very thoughtful manner. There are moments of drama, and a few of farce, tension and a love story, but the main love story is that of a man for his garden, I think, and the joy of the plot is actually found again in the quiet but precise observation – the nuances of an unpleasant and strained atmosphere at the tea table; the contrast between Emily’s inability to notice nature and Anita’s quiet glory in it. But the book is also about the love affair between Anita and Mr Barlow at one end of the spectrum and Anita and his grandson Tony at the other. She comes to his large but crumbling manor for refuge - much to the annoyance of his bustling daughter, who wants him out of the house and into somewhere 'more appropriate'.
