First Impressions is a dual-narrative, a difficult feat to pull off successfully in my reading experience. The contemporary thread of the novel tells the story of Sophie Collingwood, a lifelong book lover, and recent Oxford graduate, facing the daunting task of deciding what to do with the rest of her life post-studies.

Film adaptations of Austen’s works have cropped up since the golden age of Hollywood (not to mention a film inspired by Austen herself). Emma’s shock and consternation at such a Lady Catherine is the wealthy owner of Rosings Park, where she resides with her daughter Anne and is fawned upon by her rector, Mr Collins. The historical portion of the novel introduces a young Jane Austen, circa 1796, deep in the first draft of Elinor and Marianne, the epistolary novel that would serve as the genesis for Sense and Sensibility. An example of this is the prevention of Bingley and Jane's romance because of Bingley's undeniable dependence on Darcy's opinion. Comments in Jane’s letters imply that she found her cousin pompous and tactless and it has been suggested that she based some aspects of Mr Collins’ character in Pride and Prejudice on him. Later, however, the acquaintance was ended and by 1807, when Mary was living with her sisters in Southampton, Jane described the Pearsons as ‘the only Family in the place we cannot visit’.

Other than First Impressions, which is a contemporary version of Pride and Prejudice, one may find Possibilities ( Persuasion), Amanda ( Emma), Northpointe Chalet ( Northanger Abbey), and Reason and Romance ( Sense and Sensibility). Darcy tells Charles Bingley that Elizabeth Bennet is “tolerable, but not handsome enough” to tempt him.
