It comes from the term “rye-flavoured” whisky which is why we Canadians throw the term rye around quite loosely when describing the typical Canadian style of rye-flavoured blended whisky. Go back in time to the downright dirty history of the American speakeasy and you’ll find Angostura Orange bitters in a huge number of different drinks.

It is a rich, fruity Canadian whisky with plenty of winter spice flavours, crafted using 100% rye grains to showcase the true complexities of rye whisky from Canada. As above, this was my first 100% rye whisky, and in fact my first Canadian whisky, and I have to say I really liked it.

Being VERY fond of rye based alcohol, and with lots of experience there of many different ways with that grain, from baking to brewing, this is a really lovely rye, one my wife and I would consider purchasing again. The palate leads with fig and florals before rising into a rich fusion of vanilla, cardamom, coffee, and a hint of charcoal smoke. Taste etc I can’t add to what others have said, all I can add is that you should not miss this if you like Rye or are just starting off with Ryes. A classic example of bitters, one of the few that survived US Prohibition, flavours of orange and geranium are most prominent followed by spicy cardamom and coriander. Sadly not as expressive and flavorful as I had hoped for, what with it being pot distilled and worm tub-condensed.

Lot 40 Canadian Rye is earthy and fruity on the nose with notes of apple, cinnamon, and burnt toffee. On the bright side, it’s different from the typical American rye whiskey that’s usually on the sweeter side and/or heavy on rye flavor. When Joshua immigrated to Canada the plot of land that was given to him was Lot number forty, hence the name. Im usually a Bourbon lover for vanilla and dark fruit, and scotch lover for the peaty smoke and fruitiness, but I may be visiting this bottle for a good long while.

At some point during the 2000s, Lot 40 Rye was discontinued, which caused quite a stir among whisky enthusiasts who considered it to be one of the best Canadian whiskies out there. I get light and tamed tastes of rye spice, honey, cinnamon, adzuki beans, sakura liqueur, red rice tea, and leather. Around 100 eaux de vide work together to create the rounded, bold flavour which is characterised by rich black pepper, a touch of spice and dry and candied fruit. I guess the big boys really know how to take the fun (flavor) out of their products, even if they’re marketed as a small batch. I have not had the opportunity to try it so I can’t comment on the taste, but the original did contain malted rye to supply the enzymes for starch conversion, whereas the present version uses 100% unmalted rye and use commercial enzymes for conversion.
