During the battle if an opponent’s vitality is reduced to zero they’re killed and removed from the map. In my earlier review of Grimslingers, I was pretty vocal that I felt the quasi-RPG narrative found in the game was its best attribute. These negative statuses often require dumb luck to remove or significant amounts of money to remove. The Rumors expansion introduces bonus side quests that can allow a party to argue about where to go and what missions to prioritize.

The setting and many of the details are given a haziness that allows the audience to generally recognize the setting without focusing on the anachronisms that pop up at a steady pace. Personally, I like Descent but if it came down to a choice of playing that or Folklore, I’d choose Folklore every time.

These archetypes also have two different paths you can select which, in reality, expands your choices to twelve characters. As we played through the scenario, we allocated loot drops to those who would benefit most and really sought to help each other become better at our individual foci. Explore new combat mechanisms that can be used in this new box expansion as well as be added to the core game and Dark Tales expansion. Artifacts are rare items which can provide really nice abilities, modifiers, or powers to a character while companions can do the same by mainly modifying skills. The story journal will also point the players toward different locations across the world map and the current party leader gets to choose where the group travels to next.Also, Folklore isn’t truly a miniatures game in the first place and would be just as great if we were using counters to represent the heroes and monsters instead of minis so I’m not shaving that much off the review score. I really have been enjoying these because they help you level up and pick up coin that you can spend at the marketplace. Dying in Folklore is not the end for your character… dead characters play on as their ghost with ethereal powers to strike down your foes from beyond the grave.

Folklore really accomplishes the same feel as a DnD campaign but without huge time commitment and “complicated” skill checks. No game is perfect though, and the more I played the more some issues other players and reviewers noted did become apparent. If you’re looking for an RPG-like experience in a board game, with a cool story and setting, you really should give Folklore a hard look.

The pacing/flow of the game play is constantly changing modes and never feels like it gets stuck in a boring rut. Outside of Ninja Dice, GreenBrier is well known for producing epic games and Folklore is no different. Folklore includes a dozen dice which anyone with a passing familiarity with PnP RPGs will instantly recognize: d4, d6,d10, and d100.

Gamers like that happen to be few and far between, however, so this title is going to be right up a lot of people’s alleys. While the basic combat isn’t necessarily the most innovative, Folklore introduces one of the best additions to this genre in a long time: playing after death. Please note: The second edition of Folklore: The Affliction contains cardboard standees instead of the plastic figures from the first edition. Attacking is fairly simply as a character may chose an adjacent target if a melee weapon is equipped or a target in range if using a ranged attack. The Fall of the Spire expansion contains six more stories, featuring new mechanisms for combat and town events.You have a character sheet (or several) with a range of stats that change as you adventure and also contribute to your dice rolls. There seems to be some scale issues with some figures (especially the humanoid ones) and the Vampire mini has two right hands. Skirmish combat reminds me a lot of the text and dice based combat from the Fighting Fantasy or Destiny Quest books. This of course always serve to break player immersion into the game, and is frankly something a professional publisher shouldn’t be allowing to happen in 2017. Before I truly dive in allow me to also recommend the person tasked with the role of narrator be someone who can get into a roleplaying spirit as Folklore contains a good bit of reading aloud.
